The Switchfoot Concert Non-Pictures
Written by Gel on Tuesday, September 11, 2007Reminder to self: next time, learn to not always go by the so-called rules. I read about what not to bring to Cuneta Astrodome from the official Switchfoot in Manila blog, so I left my trusty Ixus at home. Erika read the same entry, so she didn't bring a camera either. The moment we got inside the venue--surprise, surprise--everyone was clicking away with their digicams/MP-ed camphones. (We only had low-end, VGA ones. :)) Kaya bitter, lol.)
Akala ba namin "Cuneta Astrodome's security will be very strict (emphasis on the "very"), and if you happen to bring any of these items, they will be taken from you and kept in a safe place, and you may claim them after the concert."? Right.
The concert did not start until an hour after the schedule, but it was alright. We made the waiting fun by pointing out other people-- what they were wearing, why they were wearing such things to the moshpit (think: revealing top, 3" dangling earrings, long pearl necklaces, heels that could kill). And then there were a few celebrity sightings (Anne Curtis, Rica Peralejo, Champ of Hale, Bodie of PBB2, and Atom Araullo). LOL. Front act was Salamin, who did 3 songs. All lyrics of which, I did not understand. :P
Switchfoot, who supposedly played for free, did more than enough songs that was worth my P1200. I don't have the concert line-up, and I dunno how many exactly they sang. I lost count at 10. Hee. Somewhere in the middle of the show, they were also made to eat balut. We also thought the show would be cut because of some crazy fan who went onstage, but Jonathan Foreman went back to sing Only Hope, followed by the rest of the group when things got calmer.
Perhaps it's the experience of first time seeing and hearing one of my favorite foreign bands live, and the fact that their stage presence didn't have any primadonna-ish feel at all, that will make this event worth remembering. I didn't have a camera to immortalize moments as they were happening, so the only (material) reminder I got is this:

A Block of Some Sort

I miss doing designs I made myself, instead of just copying and pasting freely distributed stuff on the web. I open Photoshop and stare at the blank canvas for a long period of time; trying to conceptualize anything from scratch, but failing to come up with something even worth saving. :(

This is what my screenshot looks like right now. 1024x2560, woot.
I'm currently using two monitors. Helps a lot, because there's not much need for toggling between windows. I can do optimization and other work-related stuff on one, and personal things (like what I'm doing now, haha) in another. It's a must-have for multi-tasking. :) If LCDs weren't that costly, I'd like to have this kind of setup at home. Haha.
Downside is, I have to share my workstation with a night-shifter for a month, more or less, until their office gets finally set up. Fine with me, as long as he/she keeps the desk clean, the keyboard and mouse non-sticky, and his/her hands off my other things. >:P
Life After Ragnarok
Written by Gel on Monday, July 23, 2007Still can't sleep. Had coffee late Sunday night with friends I've met three years back through Philippine Ragnarok Online. It was good to catch up with each other's lives post-RO addiction, hehe. These are the people I've shared the same passion with in leveling up, doing quests, over-upgrading armors and equips, breaking emperiums and taking over agits, and collecting as much cute headgears as our zenies (RO money) could afford.
It's been months since we quit the game, but we make it a point to keep in touch and meet once in a while in spite of our busy schedules. I'm glad the friendship still remains long after RO. :)
In Memory of Barfield
Written by Gel on Sunday, July 22, 2007This post is long overdue, because I'm still not totally over the shock of losing my dearest human-cat, Barfield. I guess I will never be. He died a few days ago, because he was fed something he wasn't supposed to eat by the relatively new helper. X( I still haven't fully accepted that fact, but I have to move on.

I cried buckets when I learned of what happened. I've had Barfield even before he was able to walk. He's never seen any other cat until he was nine months old, that's why he preferred socializing with humans more. He was the first cat my boyfriend ever liked. He loves my mom and would always follow her around the house. He might have even been a dog in his past life.

Old School
Written by Gel on Tuesday, July 10, 2007I rediscovered Way Back Machine (for the nth time, actually), so I looked up the old websites I've had since 2001. I just found out that even the images were actually archived (because I was striving on dial-up before), but takes time to load. Coolness.
My first blog post ever was a little more than six years ago, which merely said "Test". :P First blog, first got hosted at Sugarie.Net. I remember Blogger having a split type window interface then, pre-Google. Haha. A couple of months after, I moved to Imperfectly.Org, where I used Greymatter as my publishing tool. There was the ballerina layout (first one at the new host), and the layout I did in a matter of hours before leaving for the States. The one blog layout I've had at Sixfeetsmall.Org (and the last one before I kindof quit from blogging) was never archived, only the hiatus page I put up before it.
Hay, fun. I miss those good old days. I miss making layouts from scratch. :)
EDIT: I checked to see if my old Hypd URL had any archives, thinking all I'd find are hiatus pages in black and white. Turns out I actually set up a blog then and I stopped blogging in September 2003, not 2002. :D I forgot about that.

Stupid Way to Waste Money

Last week, I bought a pair of sandals I don't even like, and I will most likely not wear. I actually forgot about it until this morning when I was looking through our shoe rack. Psh.

The Spice Girls are coming back together for a World Tour! Yay. I registered for the concert in HK which will be on January 12. I also had Allan register (against his will, LOL), just in case he gets chosen instead of me. Hee. Now, time to save up.Rewind to nine years back. It broke my heart when they split up. I didn't believe the news that Geri left the group because confirmation didn't come early, until the video of Viva Forever with CGI faeries was released. I thought they were never going to have a world tour, ever.
Thanks to Erika for the heads-up on the registration-for-tickets thing. :)
Waaay Cheaper Alternative

Lewis & Pearl Dew Drops cologne smells like D&G Light Blue! Although, of course, the latter's scent stays a lot longer. I have heard about this before from a former officemate, but I only got around to buying one because I needed something that's practical for everyday use and I could carry in my bag without adding too much weight. The best thing about it? It's dirt cheap, a 50ml bottle costs roughly PHP30 only. :)

Transformers the Movie

Transformers is, hands down, a brilliant movie. I love it! :DTruth be told, I wasn't really looking forward to seeing the film as I expected it was all robots firing laser beams at each other. I was just being the dutiful girlfriend who came to see it with the boyfriend who loved the animated series and anticipated the movie so much, he bought tickets for the first day in advance.
Barely halfway through the movie, I realized how much I underestimated Transformers. I especially liked the transformations of robots to their alternate mode. Heck, I love everything about the movie. I love it so much that the moment I got home, I looked it up at The Internet Movie Database. Yes, I'm officially a fan. LOL.
Some trivia on Transformers (from IMDB):
- It took approximately 38 hours to render one frame of the CGI animation to portray the Transformers. (that explains why the transformations are superb)
- Producer Don Murphy decided, after listening to feedback from Transformers fans, to use the voices from the "Transformers" (1984) (and its spin-off The Transformers: The Movie (1986)). Veteran voice actors Peter Cullen and Frank Welker, who provided the voices for the iconic Transformer leaders Optimus Prime (Cullen) and Megatron (Welker), were auditioned personally by director Michael Bay, who feared that their aged voices would be noticeable. Cullen was confirmed to reprise his role, but Welker's voice had aged too much and besides didn't suit Megatron's new alien look, and so Hugo Weaving took the role of Megatron. However, Welker reprises his role as Megatron in Transformers: The Game (2007) (VG).
- Bumblebee's classic alternate mode was a Volkswagen Beetle, but this was changed to a Camaro. This was because Michael Bay wanted to avoid comparisons with Herbie the Love Bug.

Also the writers thought it was like "having Darth Vader transform into his own lightsaber and someone else swinging him around," so it was changed to an "interstellar jet."
- According to one of the CGI artists that created the animated robots at ILM, if you took all the polygons (CGI building blocks) from all the autobots and decepticon models they created at the studio, and strung them end to end, they'd reach to the moon and back and you'd still have enough left over to build the coliseum in Rome two times.
This movie definitely tops my list this year, so far. Can't wait for the sequel! :)

Everything seems to require too much effort: from opening an ATM account, to having my driver's license photocopied (they don't have a friggin' copier in their office), to enrolling my account for internet banking. Don't even ask about the customer service.
Anyways, aside from the fact that their new accounts teller is apparently misinformed about valid government IDs (and most of the bank's products), activation of internet banking account takes more than a week. Not one week, as I was initially told. I went to their branch this morning to get my login details only to find out that they don't have it yet, and deliveries from the head office are on every Tuesdays only. Tuesday messengers, wtf?
Talk about efficient. Your success is our business, my arse.
EDIT: I rediscovered BancnetOnline which is now a better site, both in structure and usability. No enrolment process, whatsoever. Just key in your card number and PIN, voila, you can check your current balance and pay bills at no service charge.

Our Newest Baby!

Meet Maki, the newest member of this household. He is a month-old mongrel (a cross between a Chow Chow and an askal) we got last Sunday from a friend of Allan's officemate. He weighs a kilo and a half, and sleeps 90% of the time. He loves to take naps, eat, and gnaw at things. In that order. He also likes being held to sleep, lying flat on his tummy on the floor and staying in the direction where the fan is pointing. He hates enclosed spaces.
We brought him to the vet yesterday. It was my first visit to one (I never brought any of my pets before), and it was not pleasant for the three of us. The veterinarian didn't seem too friendly with canines; her clinic reeked of unwashed canine urine, and all the dogs that were staying there seemed, I dunno.. unhappy? I think Maki got traumatized with how the (female) vet gave him shots. He was treated in really scruffy manner, not in a way you'd expect an animal doctor to administer medications. What those were for weren't even explained to us in clarity.
OK, so she told us the puppy has flu (if it wasn't obvious already), and asked us questions without examining Maki first. Then she went on giving him shots. Part of me wanted to question her if she really knew her thing, but I was more concerned of Maki's cries earlier. Needless to say, we're changing vets. I don't trust that woman. :s

Pinhole Camera Blues

I am half-decided on buying a pinhole camera.I've been lusting over this snap-to-assemble one I've seen in a local toy store. It costs roughly P500 ($10!) only. Really cheap. :) And the best thing: it's a toy! I Google-d the product and came across an illustrated demo of the actual contents of the kit. It looks a tad complicated what with all the tiny parts, but assembling the camera looks like fun.
Thing is, I have no idea about pinhole photography, or any type of artsy-fartsy film photography for that matter. I can only point-and-shoot as far as cameras are concerned; f/stops, aperture, and metering are terms enough to give me that dazed look.
This would be the closest thing I'd get to lomo cameras for now.
